<What is Hasami porcelain?>
Hasami porcelain is characterized by its immaculate white base color and its delicate dyeing technique painted in Kuresu (indigo). It is produced in the historic town of Hasami, which sits in the very north of Nagasaki Prefecture, along the border with Saga prefecture. The town is located in a plain surrounded by small mountains that provides the raw materials for porcelain ware. Hasami began crafting its porcelain ware more than 400 years ago. Hasami craftsmen developed highly efficient systems to mass produce their porcelain products, which allowed them to improve the quality and make porcelain ware affordable to the common people.
For a long time, Hasami porcelain was confused with porcelain made in the famous pottery towns of Arita and Imari, both located in Saga prefecture, because it used to be shipped through Arita and the nearby port of Imari. Even today, Hasami porcelain remains in the shadow of Arita. And yet, it is estimated that at least 16% of daily tableware sold in Japan have been made in Hasami town.
